Tenancy law after relationship breakdown: What to do?

Questioner

hello, i lived with my boyfriend in a rental house, now the relationship is broken, and i have been living somewhere else for 3.5 months. i then immediately deregistered with the municipality. but now the house is completely terminated, (my ex has to move out,) but i still have to pay the rent because i did not deregister with the housing association. how does this work??? do i have to pay for this or can i get out of it, after all i have not lived there for a long time. regards.

Unfortunately, I don't have good news for you. If you are formally a co-tenant, you should have terminated the lease. Because that did not happen, you remain jointly responsible for the lease until it is terminated. The deregistration with the municipality is irrelevant.

Lawyer

If you did not terminate the tenancy, you were still a tenant and your landlord (as a contractual partner) is entitled to payment. After all, the fact that you have deregistered with the municipality is something that is outside the relationship with the landlord.
