Options to terminate a lease contract?

In May 2020, car was written off due to an accident, and in June 2022 a new car was purchased with private lease. Of course they wanted income information and I provided it. Lessor tells me that due to a divorce I received a voluntary contribution for the time being and had my own income as a self-employed person. Now in 2023, the separation around the alimony amount is not sufficient and I am unfortunately still incapacitated for work, with less income than expected when the lease started. Emailed the lessor to ask what my options are. My question to them was, can I switch to a smaller car with lower costs or cancel the contract free of charge? But I can only terminate with a fine of €4000 or serve out the contract. What are my options to do something about this?
