Who is liable/guilty for breaking a window?

Questioner

Situation sketch: My wife and I received a message from her sister (under mental treatment/medication) that she did not feel safe in her current relationship and wanted to be picked up. Upon arrival, the door was opened and some tense words were exchanged. At one point, my wife walked in and then the door was closed and locked. After that, I knocked/tapped on (a window of) the door, but it was too hard and the window was broken. Then the door was opened again and after a long conversation the situation finally ended well. The sister went with us with the approval of her boyfriend. Ask: Who is liable/guilty and should pay for the window? And can this be claimed from which insurance (ours or her boyfriend's)?

Good afternoon, I assume your story as described above. In the sentence 'Then I knocked/tapped on (a pane of) the door, but it was too hard and the pane broke.' I gather that you tapped too hard on the pane, causing it to break. It does not matter that someone else slammed the door. The breaking of the pane is due to an action that you performed, namely tapping (too hard) on the pane. If you have liability insurance, you could perhaps try to compensate for the damage in that way. Gr, Silvienne Leito FerLei Legal 06-49175526
