How long can you stay with someone?

Questioner

A family member who lives on the other side of the country has found a real dream job in the province where we live. However, from their own place of residence, this person cannot possibly arrive at their new employer on time in the morning. They are actively looking for a new place to live, but that is of course not easy in the current housing market. The family member is therefore allowed to stay with us a few times a week. My question is: how often and for how long is someone allowed to stay with you before it is considered anything other than 'staying with us' (and someone must therefore be registered in our municipality, for example)? Important details: - we own a house - the family member has his or her own rental home elsewhere in the country - we have no benefits or allowances - the family member stays with us 4 nights a week, and spends the other days/nights at home - we really see the family member as a guest; for example, we have not handed over a house key and we do not charge rent or anything like that.

Good morning, You can change the composition of your household at your own discretion, especially since you own a home. So in principle you can have a family member stay in your home. Please note: the tenant (in this case your family member) is (usually) required to have his main residence in the home where he is registered. What can be considered as 'main residence' can be determined on a case-by-case basis. He may be wise to read the rental agreement (and any general terms and conditions).
