What can I do if my parents don't pay child support?

Questioner

My parents have been divorced for 4.5 years. However, now that I am 18, they no longer want to pay anything, while I have read that they are obliged to have some kind of maintenance obligation from 18 to 21. They also do not want to have a recalculation made. What can I do now? Is it possible to have them obliged to make a recalculation?

Lawyer

Good morning, sorry to hear this. I can imagine that this is not a pleasant situation. Are you still living at home or are you living on your own? Parents are indeed legally obliged to contribute to the costs of living and study (alimony) until the age of 21. If your parents do not want anything, it may be wise to hire a lawyer. He or she can try to write to your parents to see if a solution and calculation can be found that way. If that does not work, then a procedure will have to be started at the court. If desired, I can assist you in this. I have assisted young people in such procedures before.
