Who should pay for the repair costs of my dishwasher in my rental home?

Questioner

I live in a rental property and have been provided with built-in kitchen appliances (all new). Now after 2.5 years the display of the dishwasher broke off when I wanted to set a program. I have always cleaned and maintained the dishwasher properly. The pin that is supposed to hold the screen has now broken off and the dishwasher is now unusable. The landlord states that I have to repair the dishwasher at my own expense. In my opinion this falls under wear and tear of the dishwasher and the landlord must pay these costs. Can I recover these costs from the landlord?

Lawyer

In almost all cases, the built-in appliances belong to the home and are rented out by the landlord with the home. In principle, maintenance is also his/her responsibility. Does your contract say anything about the equipment in the kitchen? This can sometimes make a difference. Sometimes you might read something about minor maintenance. That is usually the tenant's responsibility. But in most cases the built-in appliances are for the landlord. If you have used the dishwasher normally (and you indicate that) I see no reason at first sight why you should have to pay for the repair. See also the link below from the rent committee.
