Higher final invoice for painting work

The house painter sent us a final invoice that was approximately 20% higher than the original quote. We approved the quote, but the starting point was that it could not be higher. I also confirmed this agreement in an email to the painter. What now: can the painter just send us a higher final invoice without informing us about additional work?

Clear agreements must be made about additional work. The contractor must warn you of additional costs. If this has not happened, you do not have to pay the 20% increase. However, clearly inform the contractor by e-mail that you do not agree with the higher costs and pay what you owe him.

You can indeed do that and then clearly state that you do not agree with the higher costs. The contractor can then always indicate why he thinks he is entitled to the extra payment. For example, also in the description of the transfer via the bank.
