My ex pays parental contributions but does not want to pay alimony

Questioner

When my daughter turned 18, my ex-husband stopped paying alimony. He says that he now pays parental contribution and does not have to pay alimony. He thinks that what I received in alimony should now be paid by myself. My daughter still goes to school and does not work. For me that is a lot of money that I no longer receive; I do not receive child benefit for her and I miss the parental contribution. But I do have to pay half of everything. Next year my son will turn 18 and then he will stop paying alimony to my son. The children live with me. Can this just happen?

Lawyer

Your ex has a so-called continued maintenance obligation for an 18+ child. This continues until the 21st year of life. So if your ex stops paying, your children can claim child support through their own lawyer. This concerns the obligation to contribute to the costs of living and education, regardless of whether your children live at home or not.
