What am I entitled to when a relationship ends if we have bought a house together?

Questioner

The relationship between me and my partner has unfortunately ended. We own a house together. I would like to continue living in it, but my ex-partner is not cooperating. The alternative is to sell the house. My ex-partner does not want to sell the house until he has new accommodation. I want to do this as soon as possible. In my opinion, we can both find a temporary housing solution with friends/family. Question 1: As one of the owners of the house, do I have the right to continue living in the house and buy out my ex-partner? Question 2: If we sell it, when should this happen? I want it fast. My ex-partner is not in a hurry. Who will have the upper hand?

Lawyer

1) Yes, and arrangements must be made for the surviving partner to continue to live in the house temporarily if it is sold. 2) your partner may not determine this; you can ultimately enforce the sale legally and possibly through substitute permission from a judge.
