Liability of car rental: what to do?

3 years ago we lent our car to a friend, he used the car to get to work. He borrowed the car for about 4 months. That went well until he put the wrong fuel in the tank and blew up the engine After many phone calls back and forth, he made every possible excuse not to help us. Because the car is in his garage, he decided last week not to do anything to the car. And now we have to get the car out of the garage because he needs the space. But our car hasn't been running for 3 years thanks to him. What can we do about this?
