Counterfeit Infringement Assistance: Get Free Advice

Ir/Madam, Today I received a settlement by email and post from a reputable law firm that specializes in, among other things, Counterfeiting Infringement. The settlement states that I have infringed on a brand of underwear and that they are demanding an immediately payable fine of €1000, net profit from me and €2500 for the damages suffered and costs involved. I think that is a considerable amount and as a student I cannot pay that within 14 days of the date of the agreement. I am extremely shocked and do not know what to do. They say they have proof but did not send it to me. I am also currently abroad for a semester for my studies so communication will be a bit difficult. I do not want to have a big lawsuit in front of me or pay such a large fine (I cannot do that).

I can well imagine that you are shocked by the settlement received. The amounts that are demanded are not insignificant. Whether you actually have to pay back these amounts depends on a number of factors, e.g. is there an infringement, how long has this been going on and were you aware of it, what did you earn from it, is this the first time, etc. I recommend that you first send a response to the law firm about this.
