School liability: who pays for the stolen cap?

My son had to hand in his cap to the teacher at school, after class my son forgot to ask for his cap back, and after this there was a 2 week holiday. After this holiday my son asked the teacher in question for his cap again, and unfortunately it turned out that it was no longer there (stolen)? This is an expensive cap, so I would like to know who is responsible for this, school says my son, because he did not follow the rules (cap off in school) and for that reason the teacher confiscated the cap.

The school's answer seems to me a bit too easy. Of course your son should have followed the rules and the teacher had the right to take the cap, but then the teacher also had the duty to store the cap correctly. If that did not happen, then I think it can rightly be said that the school is liable.
