WIA gap insurance: Information and advice

Questioner

I turned 65 last week. Now the WAO gap benefit will stop as of this date. This without any message or anything I can find back that it will stop. My WAO benefit will continue until age 66. Is this allowed?

The adjustment of the AOW retirement age does indeed have consequences for the WIA gap insurance. Unfortunately, there are only a few insurers who have their insurance aligned with this increase. People who already received a gap insurance will now be left with a gap. In short, insurers have so far indicated that they will not repair the increased risk. The fact that you have not received any notification is probably because the insurer has made a commitment in the terms and conditions until the age of 65. So when you turn 65, this WIA gap insurance will stop. Of course, it would have been nicer of the insurer to have informed you about this and that you may therefore be left with an AOW gap. In any case, there is little you can do about it, unfortunately. You can check with the implementing agency that implements the AOW whether you are eligible for a bridging arrangement and apply for it if necessary. Such a bridging arrangement is to fill this AOW gap and applies to people who received a private WIA gap insurance before 1 January 2016. You can find information about it on the website of that agency.
