Alimony changes after divorce? Ask a lawyer!
Questioner
I am divorced and receive child and spousal support. Now my ex who was renting is going to buy a house. Does this affect my child and/or spousal support?Lawyer
That depends. If your ex will spend less on housing costs as a result, his ability to pay will increase and it could be judged that he will have to contribute more to alimony. If his housing costs will increase, it would seem unreasonable if he would want to pay less in alimony because he knew about his alimony obligations and must take this into account when entering into new financial obligations. If he starts proceedings to achieve a reduction in alimony on these grounds, I advise you to hire a lawyer who can defend you against such a request. If his housing costs will now be significantly lower, you could also consider starting legal proceedings yourself due to changed circumstances in order to obtain a higher amount of alimony. Whether this makes sense will have to be discussed in advance with the lawyer you are considering hiring in that case. If you wish, you can contact me.Take the next step
