Question: Can my lawyer just drop me?

I hired a lawyer, with the help of a supplement. I received a supplement twice, but the third time it was rejected because they thought the case was not so complicated to grant a third supplement. I have now been working on that case for 2 years. Now my lawyer says he is quitting because I have no supplement and because I cannot pay it myself. I feel quite left out in the cold since we have been working on it for so long. Can a lawyer just drop me like that?

I assume you are using government-subsidized legal aid. In that case, your lawyer should handle your case as far and as long as necessary on the compensation he receives from the government. His task is completed when the procedure is over or when there is no more work to be done.
