Shoplifting: What should you do?

Questioner

If you are falsely accused of shoplifting and there is no hard evidence against you, can they still ask for your details and force you to provide them?

Lawyer

If there is no official case of shoplifting, arrest etc. they may ask for your details, but you do not have to answer them. Of course you must be honest with the police because you have an ID obligation towards them. But they must keep your details secret and may not give them out.
