Registering a car in the Netherlands from abroad?
Questioner
I live abroad but also have a home in the Netherlands. I have been deregistered from the GBA. I have a Dutch car registered in my name in the Netherlands. This car is now quite old and I am considering purchasing another car. However, as far as I can tell, it appears not to be possible to transfer a car to your name if you are not registered in the GBA. What would be the best approach to still be able to get a car in my name? I have a home in the Netherlands and Dutch bank accounts, from which road tax etc. is also now debited. The car is intended for use in the Netherlands when I am in the Netherlands. Is temporary registration in the GBA an option? But what are the (fiscal) consequences of this?Lawyer
You have not informed your insurer of the fact that you no longer live in the Netherlands? Because in that case you are not allowed to register a car on the license plate and also not to insure it.Questioner
The car was already in my name with the corresponding insurance before I left abroad. When I left, I informed the RDW and asked exactly how I could keep the car in my name. I followed those instructions, so I assumed that everything was in order.Lawyer
This seems strange to me; someone who does not live in the Netherlands cannot keep their own car, but they can export it or suspend it. You can also no longer take out insurance.Neem de volgende stap
