Unemployment benefits in the event of dismissal: what are you entitled to?

Questioner

In addition to our paid jobs, my husband and I have a small webshop that currently does not yet rise above the level of 'hobby'. Now my husband is in danger of being fired. Is my husband now eligible for unemployment benefits?

Lawyer

If your husband loses his job, for example for 40 hours a week, and in addition to this job he works for example 20 hours a week for the webshop, then he is simply entitled to unemployment benefits for the number of hours (in this example 40 hours) that he becomes unemployed. You can namely indicate in the unemployment benefit application how many hours you still work elsewhere or as a self-employed person. These hours then do not affect the benefit. This is only the case if he indicates in the unemployment benefit application that he works 20 hours a week in addition to the job that he loses and he starts working more hours. For example 10 hours on top of the 20 hours, then these 10 hours are deducted from the benefit. Hopefully this is clear to you.
