What to do when working extra hours?

Questioner

I have a 13-32 contract, which means that I get paid for a minimum of 13 hours and a maximum of 32 hours. For the past 2 months I have been working 40 hours a week. What happens with these extra 8 hours? Will I get paid for this? If so, will this be taxed extra?

Lawyer

You must be paid for those extra hours that you work. In principle, the payroll tax on the extra hours worked is not higher than the payroll tax on the hours normally worked. After all, if you earn so much through your extra hours that your income moves to a higher income tax bracket, you must pay more tax. You can also, in consultation with your employer, have the extra hours paid out in extra free hours that may be more advantageous and/or attractive to you.
