What are your rights regarding your appearance at work?
Questioner
Good evening, I have a question. I work at a large liquor store chain and I want to grow my hair longer. Today a manager came by and told me that I have to cut it shorter. I obviously do not want this. I am wondering what my rights are in this area.Lawyer
In principle, your appearance is your business and not that of your employer, unless it hinders proper functioning within the company, for example in connection with hygiene and/or safety. At first glance, long hair is not a reason for dismissal in your case. Your employer may expect you to conform to the company image. A KLM stewardess was allowed to be dismissed by the court because she had too short hair, a tattoo and a piercing.
