Hello, we are at our wits end and are trying to put our story here. Our 3 year old rottweiler went to the specialist in Dordrecht for a TTA cruciate ligament operation on Monday 5-1-2015. She was helped, stayed there for a night, and then went home with us. She had a cough, but that was probably due to the tube in her throat during the operation. We were given medication, namely; Clavubactin for morning and evening, and Previcox once a day. And because she had to stay calm, we could also give her a Vetranquil. On Wednesday, in addition to the cough, she also had a rattling sound from her nasal passages. On Thursday, she went from a cough to severe shortness of breath, comparable to asthma. Went to our own vet and had oxygen and an injection of corticosteroids to reduce any irritation or swelling in her throat. We took her back, because it seemed to work. Less than 4 hours later, she was completely short of breath again, and drove all the way to Dordrecht. When we got there, she was listened to, but the severe squeaking made it more difficult to assess the situation. She didn't get oxygen, but another shot of corticosteroids. We were allowed to leave her there, but she had to lie in a room, because another dog was critical and wasn't allowed to make any noise. And there were only two of them. This didn't give us a good feeling and we weren't reassured that she would be monitored. Because what happens if the critical dog needs help and there is another emergency? Then our dog would have to wait. We went home again, 30 minutes in the car each time. At 0:30 we were home and gave her Vetranquil to calm her down. She went to sleep right away. At 4:00 on Friday morning she woke up in a kind of shock with severe respiratory distress. We drove back to Dordrecht, and arrived at the same doctor at 6:00/6:30. She was given some oxygen, and we had to wait, because the specialist came at 8:00. He took x-rays of the lungs, gave her a sedative, looked at her throat, didn't know where this came from either. She was admitted and would be monitored and given an oxygen hood. We were not allowed to stay, but would be kept informed of her situation. At 16:00 we still hadn't been called, so my husband called. Sorry, there was a miscommunication between colleagues and thought you had been called. In the meantime, the specialists were busy with her, because she went into total shock. At about 16:15 we were called by the specialist, and he had given her a sedative and removed mucus, but she didn't come out of her sedative. resuscitated and was back, but weak, and the 2nd time resuscitation she didn't come out. A perfectly healthy dog goes to the hospital on Monday, and she is dead on Friday. We looked at the leaflets ourselves and with one of the medicines all these symptoms could occur, actually the whole course is the same. Now it is the weekend, but the specialist will call us back tomorrow. I don't know what he will say, but I wanted to ask you what we can do, because if we know within 10 minutes what the symptoms are of an allergic reaction to a medicine, we think this is negligence of the specialist and the vet of Thursday evening. She should have forced us to leave her there, and call a specialist urgently. I hope you can do something with this. We will not get our treasure back with this, unfortunately. And only a sky-high expense. Kind regardsLawyer
If you think the vet has made a professional error of judgement, you can hold him/her liable for the damage, the costs of treatment and the value of your dog. I think it would be useful if you could provide a second opinion from another vet, on paper. In that case, I could draw up the letter of liability for you and claim your damages.
