Supplier Liability: Get Compensation

A cupboard was delivered to me yesterday which was damaged due to the incompetence of the shipping staff. Supplier subsequently admitted that one of the 2 employees had been called in last minute and had never moved any furniture. This was a friend of the family. He said on the phone that it was a gamble he took in order to be able to deliver the cabinet on time and that he was aware that this could also lead to things going wrong. The cabinet must now be returned to the factory in its entirety to be sanded down and reworked. This will probably take a few weeks. Can I hold the supplier liable and claim compensation for this?
