Liability for damage in parking lot

Questioner

Ir/Madam, Last Saturday I had an accident. There are parking spaces (blue) available in a parking lot, in one of these spaces there is a stone post. I was standing in the parking space next door and when I turned out I steered too short and hit the post. Now I was wondering, can I hold the owner of the parking space liable for this damage or is the owner allowed to put a pole in the middle of a parking space? Thank you in advance! Kind regards

Lawyer

One of the most important principles of Dutch civil law is that everyone must in principle bear their own damages. In this case, you cannot hold the owner of the land liable for damage that you have caused yourself.

You yourself state: 'I was standing in the parking space next to it and when I turned out I steered too short, causing me to hit the post'. The damage is therefore a result of your own actions and you must therefore bear the damage yourself.
