What changes after divorce? Discover your rights

Questioner

My husband has a daughter from his first marriage. She became my stepdaughter through our marriage. My husband and I divorced last year. My stepdaughter lives in a room. What is she to me now? Is she, like a (foster/step) child, also insured with my third-party insurance (with family coverage)?

Lawyer

If she lives independently, she does not need to be co-insured in your insurance. If your stepdaughter is 18 years or older, she is responsible for her own insurance(s). The legal relationship that you had as a stepparent with your stepdaughter ended after the divorce. Depending on the bond that has been built up between you and your stepdaughter, you may be entitled to a visitation arrangement (if a minor).

Questioner

Thanks for your response. I will advise my stepdaughter to insure herself.
