Legal questions about working in Belgium

Questioner

The company where I work is being taken over by a company in Belgium after bankruptcy. We were told that they want to continue with a number of employees and that they will be transferred to Belgium. They told us that those who are allowed to transfer will be presented with a contract that they have to sign within a day. I actually want to first have a good investigation into the consequences of working in Belgium. Am I obliged to sign this within a day? If I don't, I might lose my job. And will I still have rights to unemployment benefits in the Netherlands?

Lawyer

There is no legal obligation to sign the contract within a day. But of course you run the risk that the new employer will not offer you a contract if you do not sign. If you lose your job, you are in principle entitled to unemployment benefits. Work abroad is generally not suitable work. This may be different if you have worked abroad regularly.
